Data Centre Rundown: How To Achieve A PUE of 1.1

We’ve made a video for you to see just how we’ve done it.

As you know, the Node4 Northampton Data Centre is expanding its existing 360-rack footprint by 900m2 to 760 racks, spread across three data halls. The halls have been designed to meet increasing demand for secure, reliable, purpose-built Colocation that meets stringent Business Impact Level compliance, with secure ‘caged’ areas and higher density racks, using blade servers.

Moreover, all this is being achieved with a PUE of 1.1

No doubt, a PUE of 1.1 is an outstanding achievement, but, do you know how the PUE is calculated?

PUE

Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is the measure of how efficiently a Data Centre uses energy. In essence, the PUE is the ratio of the energy used by the Data Centre against the energy used by the Data Centre to deliver it’s services. It looks like this:

PUE = Total Data Centre Energy/IT Equipment Energy

Don’t be fooled by it’s simplicity; this ratio is a big deal! It is the most commonly used metric for reporting the energy efficiency of Data Centres. Moreover, PUE drives competition as Data Centres report lower and lower results.

Why is PUE Important?

PUE is a tool that Data Centre owners can use to measure how well the infrastructure is working. It also is a useful tool for identifying areas of improvement.

Moreover, it helps to reduce costs for customers, because greater efficiency means lower operating costs, and these savings can then be passed on to the customers.

So, how do Node4 compare?

Well, here’s the exciting part!

A PUE of 1.1 ranks Node4’s Northampton Data Centre amongst the most efficient Data Centres…in the world, alongside the likes of Microsoft and Google.

So, we’ve discussed how PUE is measured, now let’s satisfy your curiosity. Take a look at how it’s done:

I hoped you enjoyed this insight into how we will achieve a PUE of 1.1
