From Russia with Love… become secure with EndPoint Management
Ciaran Martin, Head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) in the UK has provided a clear warning to the UK central government of the cyber threats and risks to government departments and infrastructure. These obvious risks are built using anti-virus software produced by companies backed and owned by Russian and other foreign ownership. In a letter written to senior Whitehall civil servants Mr Martin described Russia as a “highly capable cyber threat actor”, which uses cyberspace for “espionage, disruption and influence operations”.
Although Mr Martin’s warnings are aimed specifically at the government, one wonders just how long it will be before the UK commerce becomes a target for disruption? There has already been links discovered between criminal activity of groups such as Fancy Bears and the Russian government. The distinction between hacking the state and hacking the commercial infrastructure, which supports the state, (such as banking, insurance and legal substructures), are virtually distorted.
The revelation that Russian sponsored antivirus providers can switch on hidden “features” to exfiltrate information from the host system must be disturbing to customers of those anti-virus customers. A Trojan horse to beat all Trojan horses!
Node4 would like to offer customers that suspect anti-virus with the opportunity to switch out their Russian AV for Node4’s EndPoint Management System (N4EPMS), which is managed from our Nottingham Security Operations Centre (SOC).
